Over the years, our team has spoken with thousands of UK Muslims after they return from Umrah. We ask them the same question every time.
What do you wish you had known before you went?
The answers are remarkably consistent. The same things come up again and again, from pilgrims in Manchester and Birmingham and London and Bradford. From first-timers and those who have been multiple times. From families and solo pilgrims and elderly couples.
Here is what they said.
I Wish I Had Checked the ATOL Number First
This comes up more than anything else.
Not from people who had a bad experience with an unprotected agency. From people who, looking back, realise they never checked and got lucky. Who then tell their children, their siblings, their friends check the ATOL number before you pay anything.
ATOL Air Travel Organiser's Licence is a UK government protection scheme.
Every agency selling flight-inclusive packages must hold it by law. It protects your money if the agency fails.
Without it, your money has no legal safeguard.
The check: atol.org.uk. Agency name or licence number. 30 seconds. Non-negotiable.
Hajj And Umrah Experts holds ATOL licence 11375. Check it right now at atol.org.uk.
I Wish Someone Had Told Me About Hotel Distance
This is the most consistent regret we hear from returning pilgrims. Not the most dramatic but the most consistent.
People book a 4-star hotel. The room is fine. The facilities are what they expected. And then they realise that getting from the hotel to Masjid Al Haram and back takes 40 minutes every time. Every prayer. Every Tawaf. Every personal visit.
In Makkah, you visit the Haram many times daily. Five prayers plus additional worship often 6 to 10 visits. Each visit is a round trip. From a hotel 20 minutes away, that round trip is 40 minutes. Over 10 nights with 8 daily visits, you spend over 50 hours walking between hotel and mosque.
From a hotel 5 minutes away, every round trip is 10 minutes. The Haram is simply there.
Always ask: what is the specific hotel name and how many minutes is it on foot from the nearest Haram entrance?
Our Package Tiers by Distance
Silver 3-Star:10-15 minutes from the Haram. Most affordable complete option.
Gold 4-Star: 5-7 minutes from the Haram. Breakfast included. Most popular with UK families.
Platinum 5-Star: 2-3 minutes from the Haram. Swissotel Makkah, Pullman Zamzam. For elderly pilgrims and families with young children.
I Wish I Had Known About October
This one surprises people when they hear it from experienced pilgrims. October for Umrah? Most UK Muslims think Ramadan, or school holidays.
October in Makkah: 28-34 degrees. Warm, comfortable, entirely manageable for outdoor worship at any time of day. Noticeably smaller crowds than Ramadan or the summer school holiday peaks. The most competitive Umrah pricing of the year.
For pilgrims with flexible dates — no school-age children, retired, or flexible annual leave October is our most consistent recommendation.
I Wish I Had Taken My Parents in the Right Tier
This one is said with genuine emotion sometimes.
Families who brought elderly parents on Silver packages and watched them struggle with the walk to the Haram. Families who wish they had spent a little more on Gold or Platinum so their parents could attend every prayer at the mosque without it being physically costly.
Which Tier for Elderly Relatives?
Gold 4-Star: Hotels 5-7 minutes from the Haram. Breakfast included. Right for most families travelling with elderly relatives.
Platinum 5-Star: 2-3 minutes from the Haram. For elderly pilgrims who want to attend every prayer at the Haram — Platinum proximity is what makes that practically achievable.
I Wish I Had Known About February Half-Term
This comes from families with school-age children who chose summer holidays for Umrah and spent a week managing 42-degree heat with children.
February half-term in the UK aligns with Makkah temperatures of 18-22 degrees the most comfortable Saudi weather of any school holiday window. One week of holiday is enough for a 7-night Umrah package.
Best School Holiday Months for Umrah
February Half-Term: 18-22 degrees. Best weather of any school holiday. Manageable crowds. 7-night package fits the week.
Easter: 25-30 degrees. Two-week window for a 10-night package.
December: 20-24 degrees. School Christmas holidays. Book by July.
Summer July-August: 40-45 degrees. Requires planning. Gold or Platinum strongly recommended to reduce outdoor walking.
I Wish I Had Known We Could Fly from Manchester
UK Muslims in Manchester, Bradford, Leeds, Huddersfield, and across the North consistently say this after discovering it for the first time.
Manchester Airport has direct Saudia flights to Jeddah. Non-stop. 7 to 8 hours.
UK Departure Airports for Umrah
Manchester: Direct Saudia flights to Jeddah. Best for Northern UK Muslims.
Birmingham: 20-30 minutes from most Midlands Muslim areas. Connecting via Dubai, Doha, Istanbul.
Leeds Bradford: Serves West Yorkshire. Bradford, Leeds, Huddersfield, Halifax.
London Heathrow: Most frequent direct flights. Best for London and South East.
London Gatwick: South London, Surrey, Sussex, Kent.
I Wish I Had Booked Ramadan Earlier
Every year without exception, people contact us in January or February wanting Ramadan packages and finding that hotel allocations near the Haram at their preferred tier are gone.
Good Ramadan hotel allocations fill months before Ramadan arrives. This happens every year. The pilgrims who get the best options are the ones who book in October or November for the following year's Ramadan.
If Ramadan Umrah is your intention for 2026 — the right time to book is now.
What This Means for Your 2026 Umrah
The patterns from these conversations are clear.
