Allah says in the Quran:
"And to Allah belong the best names, so call upon Him by them."
(Surah Al-A'raf 7:180)
The 99 names of Allah — Al-Asma Al-Husna — are not just names to memorise. They are the most direct way to call upon Allah in dua.
When you stand at the Kaaba, at the Multazam, drinking Zamzam, in sajdah in the Haram — you are not calling into the void. You are calling a Being who is Al-Rahman (the Most Merciful), Al-Wadud (the Most Loving), Al-Razzaq (the All-Provider), Al-Shafi (the Healer).
Knowing which name to call for which need — and calling upon Him by it — is how dua in Makkah reaches its full depth.
This guide covers the most significant names for the duas that UK pilgrims most commonly bring to the Haram.
How to Call Upon Allah by His Names in Dua
The method is simple:
Begin your dua by calling Allah by the name most relevant to what you are asking.
Ya Rahman — O Most Merciful — before asking for forgiveness or mercy.
Ya Razzaq — O Provider — before asking for rizq or financial relief.
Ya Shafi — O Healer — before asking for health.
Ya Wadud — O Most Loving — before asking for a spouse or for family harmony.
This is not a formula — it is a recognition of who you are speaking to. You are not asking a generic being. You are asking the specific One whose attribute is exactly what you need.
Names of Allah for Forgiveness — At the Multazam and in Sajdah
Ya Ghaffar — The Repeatedly Forgiving
Ya Ghaffar-ighfir li.
"O Repeatedly Forgiving — forgive me."
Al-Ghaffar — not just forgiving once, but repeatedly. Again and again. The One who forgives the same sin asked for with the same sincerity each time.
Ya Afuww — The Pardoner
Ya 'Afuww u'fu 'anni.
"O Pardoner — pardon me."
Al-Afuww is not just forgiveness — it is the wiping away of the record. As if it never happened. This is the name in the dua of Laylatul Qadr that Aisha (رضي الله عنها) was taught by the Prophet ﷺ.
Ya Tawwab — The Ever-Accepting of Repentance
Ya Tawwab tub 'alayy.
"O Ever-Accepting of Repentance — accept my repentance."
Al-Tawwab — the One who turns to the servant with acceptance every time the servant turns to Him. No matter how many times. Call Him by this name at the Haram.
Names of Allah for Rizq and Provision — At Zamzam and the Multazam
Ya Razzaq — The All-Provider
Ya Razzaqu-rzuqni rizqan halalan tayyiban wasi'a.
"O All-Provider — provide me with halal, good and abundant provision."
Al-Razzaq — provision is His attribute, not a favour He grants sometimes. He provides. It is what He does. Call Him by this name when drinking Zamzam for rizq.
Ya Mughni — The Enricher
Ya Mughni aghnini bifadlik.
"O Enricher — enrich me through Your favour."
Al-Mughni — the One who makes His servant rich with genuine sufficiency. Not just money, but freedom from need of anyone but Him.
Ya Fattah — The Opener of Doors
Ya Fattah-iftah li.
"O Opener — open (the door of provision/ success/ease) for me."
Al-Fattah — the One who opens closed doors, removes obstacles, makes a way where there seemed to be no way. Read this for anything that feels stuck or blocked.
Names of Allah for Health and Healing — When Drinking Zamzam for the Sick
Ya Shafi — The Healer
Ya Shafi-shfini (for yourself) / ishfihi (male) / ishfiha (female).
"O Healer — heal me / heal him / heal her."
The Prophet ﷺ said in the healing dua: "Cure — for You are the Healer. There is no cure except Your cure."
Al-Shafi is not one of the 99 names listed in all traditions, but the attribute of healing belongs to Allah and calling upon Him as Al-Shafi is established from the Sunnah.
Ya Latif — The Subtle and Kind
Arabic:
Ya Latif-ultuf bi.
"O Subtle and Kind — be gentle with me."
Al-Latif — the One who is infinitely subtle, who works through means we cannot see, whose kindness operates in ways beyond our perception. When illness is ongoing and the path forward is unclear — Ya Latif.
Names of Allah for Marriage — For Those Seeking a Spouse
Ya Wadud — The Most Loving
Ya Wadudu hab li zawjan salihan (male seeking wife) / zawjatan salihatan (female seeking husband).
"O Most Loving — grant me a righteous spouse."
Al-Wadud — love is His attribute. When asking for the love between spouses, call upon the One who is Al-Wadud.
Ya Karim — The Most Generous
Ya Karimu akrimni bi zawjin salihin.
"O Most Generous — honour me with a righteous spouse."
Marriage is a gift — and gifts come from Al-Karim. Ask the Most Generous for this gift.
Names of Allah for Children
Ya Wahab — The Bestower
Ya Wahhabu hab li minas-salihin.
"O Bestower — grant me from the righteous."
Ibrahim (عليه السلام) used this when asking for a righteous child in the same verse as the dua: "Rabbi hab li minas-salihin." Al-Wahab — the One who bestows gifts without any expectation of return. Children are His gift to bestow.
Names of Allah for Protection
Ya Hafiz — The Protector
Ya Hafidhu-hfadhni wa ahli.
"O Protector — protect me and my family."
Ya Mani' — The Withholder of Harm
Ya Mani'u-mna' 'anniash-sharr.
