The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
"The best dua is the dua of the Day of Arafat. And the best thing I and the prophets before me have said is:
There is no god but Allah alone with no partner. To Him belongs the kingdom and all praise. And He is over all things capable."
(Tirmidhi)
This is the most powerful dua in Islam.
Not just for the Day of Arafat. But for any moment of accepted supplication — first sight of the Kaaba, at the Multazam, on Safa and Marwa, in sajdah in the Haram.
UK pilgrims who memorise this before their Umrah packages arrive in Makkah with the most powerful tool of supplication already on their lips.
What Is the Day of Arafat?
The Day of Arafat — the 9th of Dhul Hijjah — is the most important day of Hajj and one of the most significant days in the Islamic calendar.
On this day, Hajj pilgrims gather on the plain of Arafat from noon until sunset in the central act of Hajj — the Standing (Wuquf).
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"Hajj is Arafat."
(Abu Dawud)
For UK Muslims who are not performing Hajj — the Day of Arafat is still among the most significant days of the year. The Prophet ﷺ recommended fasting on this day for those not performing Hajj:
"Fasting on the Day of Arafat expiates the sins of the previous year and the coming year."
(Sahih Muslim)
The Complete Dua of Arafat — Arabic, Transliteration and Meaning
The Core Dua — The Best Thing Said
Meaning: "There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner. To Him belongs the kingdom and all praise. And He is over all things capable."
This is what the Prophet ﷺ described as the best thing he and all the prophets before him ever said. Read it continuously. Read it on Safa. Read it on Marwa. Read it before the Kaaba at first sight.
The Extended Dua of Arafat
Many scholars add to the core dua:
Meaning: "There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner. To Him belongs the kingdom and all praise. He gives life and causes death. And He is Ever-Living and does not die. In His hand is all good. And He is over all things capable."
Why This Dua Is Used at Safa and Marwa During Umrah
UK pilgrims performing Umrah packages will encounter this dua at Safa and Marwa during Sa'i. It is the prescribed dua read on Safa and on Marwa — three times on each hill, with personal dua made between each repetition.
The reason is clear from the hadith — it is the best thing that can be said. At a place of accepted supplication (the hills of Safa and Marwa), the Prophet ﷺ selected the best possible words.
Reading it three times on Safa, with the full personal dua between each repetition, is the closest to the Sunnah you can come at that moment.
Reading the Dua of Arafat at Every Accepted Moment During Umrah
Beyond Safa and Marwa, this dua is appropriate at every moment of accepted supplication:
First sight of the Kaaba: Begin with La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la shareeka lah. Then make your personal dua.
At the Multazam: Where Ibn Abbas said no dua is rejected — begin with this dua, then ask for what you need.
In sajdah at the Haram: The closest point to Allah. Read this dhikr in sajdah.
Between the Yemeni Corner and Black Stone: The prescribed dua for this section of Tawaf also includes the tahlil formula.
When drinking Zamzam: Begin with Bismillah, read this dua, then make your specific request.
