When my family first started searching for Umrah packages, we had no idea what we were looking for.
We knew we wanted to go to Makkah. We knew we wanted flights and a hotel. We knew we wanted someone trustworthy to arrange it. Beyond that, we were going in blind.
We spent weeks comparing prices that were not really comparable. Looking at hotels without understanding that distance from the Haram was the most important thing about them. Choosing between agencies without knowing that one 30-second check could tell us whether our money was legally protected or not.
This is the guide I wish had existed then.
Start Here The 30-Second Check That Changes Everything
Before you look at a single price. Before you read a single review. Before you compare any hotels.
Go to atol.org.uk. Type in the name of the agency you are considering. Confirm their ATOL licence number is listed and currently valid.
ATOL stands for Air Travel Organiser's Licence. It is a UK government protection scheme. Every UK agency selling flight-inclusive packages is legally required to hold it. If the agency goes out of business before your trip, you receive a full refund. If it happens while you are in Saudi Arabia, ATOL ensures you can complete your journey or return home without bearing additional cost.
Without ATOL protection, none of that applies. Your money however much you paid — has zero legal protection.
Hajj and Umrah Experts holds ATOL licence 11375. Check it at atol.org.uk. It takes 30 seconds.
The thing my family did not know when we started looking is that some perfectly professional-looking agencies do not hold valid ATOL licences. The website looks good. The reviews seem positive. But the protection is not there. The 30-second check reveals this immediately.
Do it before anything else.
The Hotel Question Nobody Told Us to Ask
When we first compared Umrah packages, we looked at star ratings and photos. The rooms looked fine. The facilities seemed reasonable. We picked a package that felt right.
What we did not know to ask was: how many minutes is this hotel from the nearest entrance of Masjid Al Haram?
In Makkah, you visit the Haram every day many times. Five daily prayers. Tawaf. Personal worship between prayers. On a full day in Makkah, you might visit the Haram 8 to 10 times. Every single visit is a round trip from your hotel.
If your hotel is 20 minutes from the Haram, that round trip is 40 minutes. Multiply that by 8 visits a day across 10 nights you spend over 50 hours just walking between the hotel and the mosque.
If your hotel is 5 minutes from the Haram, every round trip is 10 minutes. The mosque is there. You go when you want. You return without it being an undertaking.
This is not about comfort. It is about what your days in Makkah actually look like.
For my family specifically, we had elderly parents travelling with us. I will be honest — we had not thought about how a 20-minute walk five times daily would affect my mother. By the third day, she was managing it but it was a real physical effort. If we had stayed in a hotel 5 minutes from the Haram, she would have attended more prayers there. She would have been less tired. The experience would have been different.
Always ask: which hotel specifically, and how many minutes walking to the nearest Haram entrance?
A trustworthy agency gives you a specific number. Not near the Haram. Not in the Haram area. A number.
Our Packages — What Each Tier Actually Means
Silver 3-Star — The Most Affordable Complete Option
Silver packages include everything: return flights from your UK airport, Saudi Umrah visa at £49 (100% success rate), hotel in Makkah, hotel in Madinah, all ground transportation, and ATOL protection. Nothing hidden. The quoted price is what you pay.
Silver hotels are clean and functional. They are 10 to 15 minutes from the Haram by walk or shuttle. The rooms are standard. Meals are not included — but the areas around both holy mosques have food available at every price point around the clock.
Silver is genuinely the right choice for a very large proportion of UK pilgrims. Healthy adults who want to focus entirely on worship without spending on proximity. Budget-conscious families where everyone can manage the walk. Pilgrims who have performed Umrah before and know what to expect. Anyone for whom the financial aspect of the journey is a real consideration.
The spiritual core of Umrah — Tawaf around the Kaaba, prayer in the Haram, the atmosphere of Makkah, Rawdah in Madinah — is identical across all hotel tiers.
Gold 4-Star — The Most Popular Choice
Gold packages are our most frequently booked tier. Year after year, UK families choose Gold. The reason is consistent: it provides the right combination of hotel proximity and comfort that most families need.
Gold hotels in Makkah are 5 to 7 minutes from the Haram. Breakfast is included. Rooms are larger and better furnished. The proximity means fewer long walks per prayer visit — over 10 nights this accumulates to meaningful savings in physical effort.
For families with children, Gold makes the daily routine manageable. Children tire. They need to return to the hotel between prayers. A 5-minute trip is achievable. A 20-minute trip is not, not repeatedly across a full day.
For pilgrims travelling with elderly relatives, Gold proximity makes full attendance at the Haram for every prayer practically achievable rather than a physical challenge to be managed.
For first-time pilgrims who want the confidence of a well-positioned hotel — Gold.
Platinum 5-Star — When Proximity Is Not a Luxury
Our Platinum packages place you in hotels within the Abraj Al Bait complex in Makkah — the towers that stand directly adjacent to Masjid Al Haram. Swissotel Makkah, Pullman Zamzam, Al Marwa Rayhaan by Rotana, Makkah Towers. The walk to the Haram entrance is two to three minutes. Some rooms have direct views of the Haram. Some look out at the Kaaba itself.
In Madinah, Platinum packages include Hilton Madinah, Anwar Al Madinah Movenpick, and Pullman Zamzam Madinah — all within short walking distance of Masjid an-Nabawi.
I want to be direct about who Platinum packages are for.
For elderly pilgrims — for parents and grandparents in their 60s, 70s, and beyond — Platinum proximity is often not a luxury. It is what makes attending every prayer at the Haram physically possible. A two-minute walk at 3am for Tahajjud is achievable. A 15-minute walk at 3am for Tahajjud, at an age when joints ache and energy is not what it was, often is not.
For families with babies and toddlers — a two-minute return to the hotel when a child needs rest, and a two-minute return to the Haram, is manageable. A 30-minute round trip is genuinely difficult.
For anyone for whom this journey represents years of saving and planning, and for whom the intention is to spend every possible moment in worship — Platinum removes every logistical barrier between you and the Haram.
Which Month to Go
October is the most underrated month for Umrah from the UK, and I will say that clearly because it is true.
Temperatures in Makkah in October sit between 28 and 34 degrees — warm and comfortable, not the punishing heat of July and August. Crowds are noticeably smaller than Ramadan or school holiday peaks. Pricing is the most competitive of any month in the calendar. Good hotel allocations are available.
October pilgrims consistently report having some of the most focused and spiritually productive Umrah experiences. The conditions are good. The Haram is active without being at maximum intensity. There is space to sit, to pray, to spend extended time in personal worship without managing dense crowds.
If your dates are flexible — October.
For families with school-age children, February half-term offers the best weather of any school holiday window. 18 to 22 degrees in Makkah. Comfortable enough for children to be outdoors without heat stress. The Haram is manageable. A 7-night package fits the one-week break.
December is extremely popular with UK families for the school Christmas holidays. 20 to 24 degrees. Comfortable conditions. Book by July for December travel.
Summer — July and August — is the longest school holiday window but the hottest. 40 to 44 degrees. Entirely manageable with planning: Fajr before sunrise and post-Maghrib evening are the optimal Haram visiting hours. Gold or Platinum hotel strongly recommended for summer to reduce the outdoor walking in extreme heat.
Ramadan. The most spiritually significant time in the Islamic calendar for Umrah. Book now. Hotel allocations near the Haram fill months before Ramadan begins, every single year without exception.
