When we first decided to take the whole family for Umrah, I thought the hard part was saving the money. It was not.
The hard part was the weeks we spent trying to compare packages that were not actually comparable. Looking at prices without understanding what was and was not included. Choosing a hotel tier without knowing that the distance from the Haram was the most important thing about it. Speaking to agencies without knowing which questions to ask.
We managed in the end. But we made decisions we would not make again, and we learned things we wish someone had told us before we started.
This article is that information.
Before Anything — The Check That Takes 30 Seconds
This is the first thing. Not the most interesting thing. Not the thing agencies usually lead with. But it is the most important.
Go to atol.org.uk. Type in the agency you are considering. Confirm their ATOL licence is listed and currently valid.
ATOL Air Travel Organiser's Licence is a UK government protection scheme. Every UK agency selling flight-inclusive packages is required by law to hold it. If the agency fails before your trip or during it your money is legally protected. Full refund. Or repatriation if you are already in Saudi Arabia.
Without ATOL protection, there is no such safeguard. Your money disappears with the agency.
This check takes 30 seconds. It is the most important 30 seconds in your Umrah booking process.
Hajj and Umrah Experts holds ATOL licence 11375. Verify it right now at atol.org.uk.
What All-Inclusive Actually Means
The phrase all-inclusive appears in almost every Umrah package listing. It does not always mean the same thing.
A genuinely complete Umrah package includes five specific elements. All five must be confirmed in writing before you pay a deposit.
Return flights from your UK airport. Both directions. Named airline. Confirmed routing.
Saudi Umrah visa. Processed by the agency. Included in the quoted price. Not added at the end of the booking as a separate charge.
Hotel accommodation in Makkah. The specific hotel named. The number of nights confirmed.
Hotel accommodation in Madinah. Same standard of confirmation specific hotel, specific nights.
Ground transportation. Airport transfers in both Saudi cities on arrival and departure. The journey between Makkah and Madinah.
When all five are confirmed in writing before you pay that is all-inclusive. When any one of them is missing, you are comparing an incomplete package with a complete one, and a price comparison between the two is meaningless.
The Hotel Question We Did Not Know to Ask
Before our first Umrah, we compared hotel star ratings and looked at room photos. We did not know to ask the one question that would have changed our daily experience in Makkah.
How many minutes is this hotel on foot from the nearest entrance of Masjid Al Haram?
Not near the Haram. Not close to the mosque. Not a short walk. The specific number of minutes.
Here is why this matters in practice.
In Makkah, you visit the Haram every day many times. Five daily prayers. Additional Tawaf. Personal worship between prayer times. On a full pilgrimage day, you visit the Haram 6 to 10 times.
Every visit is a round trip from your hotel.
If your hotel is 20 minutes from the Haram, every round trip is 40 minutes. Over 10 nights with 8 daily visits, you spend over 50 hours walking between your hotel and the mosque.
If your hotel is 5 minutes from the Haram, every round trip is 10 minutes. The mosque is immediately accessible. You go when you want. You return without it being a significant undertaking.
For our family, we had elderly parents with us. By day three, the walking was a real physical challenge for them. Not impossible but it was limiting how many prayer times they could attend at the Haram. If we had been in a Gold or Platinum hotel, they would have attended every prayer there throughout the trip. That would have been a different experience.
Always ask for the number. A trustworthy agency gives you a number immediately.
Our Three Package Tiers Honestly Described
Silver 3-Star Most Affordable Complete Option
Silver packages include everything: flights, visa, Makkah hotel, Madinah hotel, transport, ATOL protection. Hotels are clean, functional, and professionally managed. In Makkah, they are 10 to 15 minutes from the Haram by walk or shuttle. Meals are not included as standard.
Silver is genuinely the right choice for healthy adults who want a complete pilgrimage at the most accessible price. For pilgrims who have been before and know the area. For anyone for whom the financial aspect of Umrah travel is a real consideration.
The spiritual experience of Umrah Tawaf, prayer in the Haram, Rawdah in Madinah — is identical across all tiers. The hotel is where you sleep.
Gold 4-Star Most Popular With UK Families
Gold hotels in Makkah are 5 to 7 minutes from the Haram. Breakfast is included. Rooms are noticeably larger and better furnished. This is our most frequently booked tier every year.
The reason Gold is so consistently popular with UK families is practical. With children, you make the hotel-to-Haram trip more often than you plan. Children tire. They need to return between prayers. A 5-minute trip is straightforward. A 20-minute trip, repeatedly, with a tired eight-year-old, is exhausting.
For pilgrims travelling with elderly relatives, Gold proximity makes full attendance at the Haram for every prayer genuinely achievable rather than a physical challenge to manage around.
Platinum 5-Star When Proximity Is Not a Luxury
Platinum packages place you in hotels within the Abraj Al Bait complex the towers that stand directly adjacent to Masjid Al Haram. Swissotel Makkah, Pullman Zamzam, Al Marwa Rayhaan by Rotana. Two to three minutes from the Haram entrance. Some rooms look directly at the mosque. Some look at the Kaaba itself.
For elderly pilgrims, Platinum proximity is often the difference between being physically able to attend every prayer at the Haram and not. A two-minute walk at Fajr is achievable. A 15-minute walk at Fajr, at an age where joints ache and energy is not what it was, often is not.
For families with babies and toddlers, two minutes means returning to the hotel quickly when a child needs rest and returning to the Haram just as quickly. Thirty-minute round trips with a toddler are genuinely difficult.
For anyone for whom this journey is the most significant of their life Platinum removes every logistical barrier between you and the Haram.
When Should You Go in 2026
October is our honest first recommendation for any pilgrim with flexible dates. Temperatures of 28 to 34 degrees warm and entirely comfortable. Crowds noticeably smaller than Ramadan or school holiday peaks. The most competitive pricing of any month in the calendar.
Pilgrims who choose October consistently have some of the most personally focused and spiritually productive Umrah experiences. The Haram is active without being at maximum intensity. There is space. There is quiet for personal worship.
February half-term is our first recommendation for families with school-age children. 18 to 22 degrees in Makkah the best weather of any school holiday window. The Haram is manageable. A 7-night package fits within the one-week break.
December school Christmas holidays give two weeks and 20-24 degree Saudi temperatures. Popular with UK families. Book by July December packages fill consistently early every year.
Summer July and August is the longest school holiday window. Temperatures of 40 to 44 degrees require specific planning: Fajr before sunrise and post-Maghrib evenings for Haram activity. Gold or Platinum recommended for summer to reduce outdoor walking in extreme heat.
Ramadan. Book now. Do not wait.
The Prophet described Umrah in Ramadan as carrying the reward of Hajj. The atmosphere in Makkah during this month the Haram alive around the clock, Tarawih prayers, Iftar at the mosque, the last 10 nights — is unlike anything else. Hotel allocations near the Haram fill months before Ramadan begins, every year, without exception. There is no benefit to waiting. There is real risk.
Which Airport Should You Fly From
The assumption that you must fly from London is one of the most common and unnecessary complications in UK Umrah planning.
Manchester Airport has direct Saudia flights to Jeddah. Non-stop. 7 to 8 hours. For millions of Muslims across Greater Manchester, Lancashire, and Yorkshire — Manchester is the answer.
Birmingham Airport is 20 to 30 minutes from most Midlands Muslim residential areas. Connecting flights via Dubai, Doha, and Istanbul. For Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Coventry, Leicester, Nottingham and surrounding areas — Birmingham removes a 90-minute pre-travel journey to London.
Leeds Bradford Airport serves West Yorkshire directly. Bradford, Leeds, Huddersfield, Halifax, Dewsbury all within 30 minutes of the airport.
London Heathrow has the greatest frequency of direct flights to Saudi Arabia. Best for London and South East pilgrims.
We offer packages from all five UK departure cities.
