Saudi Arabia requires a MenACWY meningitis vaccination certificate for all Umrah pilgrims.
The certificate must show the vaccination was administered at least 10 days before travel.
Book your GP appointment immediately. This is the most common document that causes delays. GPs are often busy. Book as soon as your travel dates are confirmed.
Umrah Visa
Your agency handles the Umrah visa application. You provide: passport, meningitis certificate, passport photograph. Our team does everything else.
Processing time: 5-10 working days.
Travel Insurance
Comprehensive travel insurance covering Saudi Arabia is strongly recommended. Ensure it covers medical treatment, emergency repatriation, and cancellation.
For Children Under 12
Birth certificate required in addition to the above documents.
Step 3 - Packing Checklist for Umrah
Ihram Garments
Men: Two white unstitched sheets — upper (rida) and lower (izar). Ensure they are clean, white, and of sufficient size. Bring a spare set.
Women: Modest clothing covering everything except face and hands. Women do not wear a specific Ihram garment. Normal modest Islamic dress is appropriate.
Clothing for Makkah and Madinah
Light, loose, breathable clothing. Cotton and linen work best in the Saudi climate. Multiple sets — the heat and walking mean you will want to change regularly.
Comfortable, well-fitted walking shoes. This is important. You will walk significant distances. Sandals are not recommended for the volume of walking Umrah involves.
Light cardigan or layer for inside the Haram. The Haram is fully air-conditioned and can feel cold, especially at night.
Personal Items
Unscented toiletries only while in the state of Ihram. Scented products are prohibited during Ihram. Bring unscented soap, shampoo, and deodorant.
Small personal misting spray for outdoor Tawaf. Even in cooler months, this is useful.
Prayer mat — small, lightweight, foldable.
Tasbeeh/prayer beads.
Small Quran for personal worship.
Zamzam water containers — you will want to bring Zamzam water home. Airlines have specific allowances. Confirm with your airline before travel.
Health Items
All regular medications — bring more than you think you need. Getting specific medications in Saudi Arabia can be complicated.
Basic first aid, paracetamol, plasters, blister treatment (blisters from walking are common for first-time pilgrims).
Sunscreen for any outdoor activity outside the Haram.
Hand sanitiser.
Practical Items
Small bag or backpack for Haram visits — large enough for water, snacks, small personal items. The Haram provides free water throughout but having water and dates during Tawaf is practical.
Phone charger and appropriate adapter (Saudi Arabia uses Type G plugs — same as the UK).
Small amount of Saudi Riyals for food and incidentals near the Haram. Card payment is widely accepted in modern Saudi Arabia.
Step 4 - Spiritual Preparation
Learn the Rituals of Umrah
Before you travel, learn the rituals of Umrah in detail. What Ihram involves. The correct way to perform Tawaf — the intention, the direction, the counting. The Sa'i between Safa and Marwa. The Halq or Taqsir at the end.
Many UK pilgrims find it helpful to attend a pre-Umrah seminar or workshop — many mosques and Islamic centres run these. Several good video guides are available online.
Arriving in Makkah knowing exactly what you will do allows you to focus entirely on the spiritual experience rather than the logistics.
Learn Relevant Duas
There are specific duas for Tawaf, for entering the Haram, for drinking Zamzam water, for Sa'i, and for various moments of the pilgrimage. Learn these before you travel. The duas are more meaningful when made with understanding.
Settle Your Affairs Before Leaving
The Prophet ﷺ taught that a pilgrim should settle debts, reconcile with those they have wronged, seek forgiveness from those they have hurt, and make a sincere intention of Tawbah before Hajj and Umrah.
Leave for Makkah with your affairs in order and your heart as clear as you can make it.
Tell Family and Community
Informing family, friends, and your mosque community of your Umrah allows them to make dua for you and to ask you to remember them in your prayers at the Haram. The dua of a pilgrim is among the most significant forms of intercession.
